Chaplaincy in School
During the months of October and May students and staff are invited to come together to pray the Rosary.
During Lent all students and staff from both Upper and Lower School are invited to participate in a variety of Lenten activities.
During October all staff and students receive a card to ask if they wish to put the name of a deceased family member, loved one or friend on to our Remembrance List. A list is then created for each year group which is used during November in their year group Collective Worship assembly.
All Saints Day Mass
Each year to mark our schools Feast Day we have a whole school Mass in York Minster. This is usually held as close to the 1 November as appropriate. The Mass is attended by all staff and students and many students take an active part by reading and singing.
End of the School Year Mass
On the morning of the final day of the academic year, all students have Mass at English Martyrs to celebrate the end of year and to mark their achievements.
Additionally a special celebration Mass is celebrated for Years 11 & 13 each May.
Staff Mass
At the end of each term a Mass is celebrated to mark the end of the term and takes place in the Bar Convent Chapel.
Holy Days
When Holy Days of Obligation fall in school term time, Masses are celebrated at English Martyrs Church.
In Advent each year we have an Advent Service. This is always very well attended by our staff, students and Governors. During Advent all students and staff from both Upper and Lower School are invited to participate in a variety of Advent activities.
Year 7 Retreat Day
As part of their residential in the summer term, Year 7 students spend a day with their peers participating in a variety of reflective activities.
Year 8 Retreat Days
Our Year 8 Retreat Days for Year 8 students are held in July and provide an opportunity for students to spend a day with their peers to discuss, reflect and pray together. This time to reflect is organised and led by the RE & Chaplaincy Department.
GIFT Team Retreat
Members of our GIFT Team (Growing In Faith Together) spend three days together in October on retreat. The time is used for team-building, project planning and spiritual reflection.
Lourdes Pilgrimage
Years 9, 10 and 12 are offered the opportunity to take part in a week long pilgrimage to Lourdes every May Half Term. Students assist the supported Pilgrims to attend Mass, take part in altar serving and assisting priests with anointing the sick, among many other roles. They also get to experience the spiritual and uplifting feel of the grotto and Holy waters. It offers a very peaceful and reflective journey for our students and those who participate greatly appreciate their experience.
We have a GIFT (Growing In Faith Together) Team in all year groups from Year 8 to 13. These are student-led groups who carry out projects together on a theme of their choice, including; the environment, faith awareness, and fundraising. The students in the GIFT Teams are invited to attend a range of events across the school year.
There are a wide variety of Chaplaincy events and activities that students can support and participate in, including, but not limited to;
Easter & Christmas services
SVP Christmas Party
Awareness days – Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Awareness Day
Non-uniform day food collection for Kitchen for Everyone York (KEY)
