How are Modern Foreign Languages sacred Subjects?

The sacred endeavour of MFL enables students to appreciate and learn from the diversity and richness of other cultures. MFL provides a unique opportunity to bring about communication, inclusion, reconciliation, peace and understanding and the beauty of diversity and the unity of all God’s family.

Modern Languages Curriculum Intent

We aim to be a centre of excellence for the teaching and learning of languages. Our vision is to help students to develop those skills necessary to become proficient at communicating in a foreign language. We encourage in our pupils the curiosity and desire to learn more about foreign cultures, and to foster in them the sense of tolerance and understanding of others.

French, German and Spanish are taught at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. Latin is taught at KS4 and KS5.   We are also able to support students who wish to gain qualifications in their home language, and in the past have enabled students to sit GCSEs in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. Our approach to language learning and teaching is communicative, and we strongly believe in the role of grammar in enabling students to communicate effectively.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7 all pupils begin learning a modern language, initially with their form groups. The pupils are divided into two year groups. Pupils begin learning either French or German/Spanish depending on their year group (beginning subject changes in rotation every year). This structure continues until the end of Year 9. Students can opt to continue with their study of French, German or Spanish in KS4

Key Stage 4

Students may opt to study their KS3 language to GCSE level. We offer GCSE’s in French, German and Spanish. Pupils also have the opportunity to learn Latin in Year 10 and 11. We use the Edexcel board for all Modern Foreign Language GCSEs and OCR for Latin.

Key Stage 5

Students can choose from AQA French, German, Spanish A levels. A level Latin uses the Cambridge Board. Each student has access to a French, German or Spanish native speaker (Languages Assistant) to help improve their spoken language skills. All students use AQA Kerboodle Online Independent Learning materials to support their home studies. A significant number of our students go on to study languages at university.

Other Reasons to Choose Modern Languages at All Saints:

We run an accredited ‘Languages Leader’ course in the Sixth Form as an enrichment activity, where students work as mentors in KS3.

In March 2015 two of our Y13 students won the North East Region debating finals in French, and went on to represent All Saints at the national finals in London.

Each language classroom is fully equipped with an interactive whiteboard, and students have access to the Pearson Activelearn digital textbook and support materials.
