How is Maths a sacred subject?

The ultimate purpose of Maths is the pursuit of truth. The thinking skills inherent in the Maths curriculum should inspire and enable learners to be innovative, creative, critical and analytical learners. Exploring the beauty of mathematics enables all learners to engage with the transcendent dimensions of life, freeing them to be pioneers, trailblazers and inventors needed today and in the future. The real-world context comes first, and the theory comes second.

Maths Curriculum Intent

Our committed and enthusiastic department ensure that all students are given a varied and engaging experience of mathematics in order to build confidence for the future and to maximise their potential.

Students learn about number, ratio & proportion, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, ensuring that they develop problem solving and reasoning skills to apply this knowledge to successfully to a variety of mathematical situations.  They will be able to understand how mathematics can be applied to a range of everyday contexts, across their other subjects and to future careers.

At GCSE and A-level our students regularly achieve positive progress and they are challenged to succeed at all levels through teaching that covers a range of pathways, including foundation and higher GCSE the option to experience Level 2 Further Mathematics in year 11.  The progress of each individual student matters and our learning pathways enable all students to be supported and challenged with carefully planned activities.

A variety of assessment types are used half-termly to inform learning and revision priorities and support students to succeed on the skills and knowledge identified for them as individuals.  Students will be guided in using Sparx Maths and other platforms to work productively out of lessons.  Extra-intervention sessions are offered to KS4 and KS5 students to provide support with preparation for examinations.

In Sixth Form, we offer A-levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics and our courses include Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics or alternatively students can choose Core Maths if they wish to continue their mathematics studies to support their other subjects.

Students regularly use the department set of Chromebooks to complete quizzes and tasks online, providing engaging and precise feedback in lessons and throughout year 7-13, students are part of a Google Classroom where teachers can share key resources from lessons.

Students enjoying maths is key to making good progress and we offer enrichment opportunities including maths puzzle clubs (e.g. ‘Escape Room’ at KS3 and ‘GCHQ Code Breaking’ at KS4) alongside well established maths challenges throughout the year.
